I am in the middle of reading NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children by Po Bronson & Ashley Merryman. Its very likely you've heard of it as it seemed to have a large publicity budget. Since the book began as a series of articles written for New York Magazine, it reads more as a collection of articles than a book, with chapters on very diverse topics all relating to children.
While reading this book I hear the little voice in my head, "yes. Yes. YES!" This book provides current scientific research relating to many aspects of parenting, childhood development, education and families in such a way that challenges the currently accepted dogma. For many, there are parts of this book that will confirm what they instinctively know, such as children need more sleep, but it gives us the validation to apply needed changes in our family lives (or gives us the motivation to fight for these changes in schools now that we have seen, in print, how important many of these things are for our children).
Here is the article on sleep that chapter 2 from the book began as. It is titled Snooze or Lose.
And here is the link to the book on Amazon.
