Feeding Baby Green

With my first baby, Caleb, I had a chart in the kitchen of what foods to introduce when, checking off foods as I introduced them one at a time, three days apart. This is what I had read was the best approach to beginning solids and I followed this advice diligently. Dr. Greene's “Feeding Baby Green: The Earth-Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childhood, and Beyond” completely turns this approach upside down. Dr. Greene recommends introducing foods in rapid succession and only avoiding four categories of food: those you weren't allowed to eat while pregnant (ie unpasteurized cheeses), honey, foods your kid could choke on (ie whole grapes) and junk food. Fish, peanuts, berries, can all be started once your child is 6 months old. The main thread throughout the book is that baby food is a myth and if you want your child to love healthy food and be an adventurous eater, the time to start is now. And the books recommendations start when the mom is pregnant and then Dr Greene continues to provide tips for breast/bottle feeding, introducing foods, finger foods, the toddler years and beyond.

Here is a Q and A he did with the New York Time's Well Blog.

Here is the book on Amazon.
